Alvin “Al” Bierman, age 85, died on Friday, May 23, 2008 at his home in Horicon.
The visitation for Al will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at St. Stephen Ev. Lutheran Church, in Horicon from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. The funeral service will follow the visitation at 1:00 PM with Rev. Daniel Seehafer officiating. Burial will be at Oakhill Cemetery in Horicon with the American Legion Post #157 providing military honors.
Alvin Louis Charles Bierman was born on January 19, 1923, in Beaver Dam, to the late William and Edeth (Freeman) Biermann. He grew up in the Waupun area and in 1943, he enlisted into the United States Army. While in the service, he worked as a gun crewman during the Luzon and New Guinea Campaigns, during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1946, receiving numerous ribbons and a Good Conduct Medal. When Al returned, he was united in marriage with Dorothy Toepke on August 16, 1946, in Horicon. Al volunteered for the Horicon Fire Department for over 30 years and worked for Gardner Manufacturing for more than 30 years as a machinist, retiring in 1984. Al”s faith was important to him and he was active as an usher and a Deacon for St. Stephen Ev. Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Horicon American Legion Post #157. Al loved get-togethers with friends and family and he was always full of surprises. Camping and Euchre card nights won”t be the same without him.
Al is survived by his wife, Dorothy Bierman of Horicon, children, Jane (Thomas) Wepner of North Fond du Lac, Charles Bierman of Horicon, and John (Margie) Bierman of Montgomery, AL, grandchildren, Amy (Wayne) Jagodzinski of Grafton, Brian (Laura) Pederson of Appleton, and Eric Bierman of Montgomery, AL, great grandchildren, Zachary, Ashlee, Nathan and Gracie, sister-in-law, Hattie Biermann of Waupun, brother-in-law, Conrad (Alba) Toepke of Alexandria, VA, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, and his brothers and sisters, Lyle, Clarence, Elmer, and Wilbur, Violet Schroeder and Dorothy Solverude.
The family suggests that memorials be made in Al”s name to St. Stephen Lutheran School.
