Elizabeth “Bette” Mertens, age 88, died Friday, January 11, 2013 at Clearview Health and Rehabilitation Center in Juneau.
Visitation for Bette will be at St. Mark”s Episcopal Church in Beaver Dam on Friday, January 18, 2013 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will follow at church on Friday at 11:00 AM with Rev. Mary Mail officiating. Burial will be at Hartland Village Cemetery.
Bette was born on July 15, 1924 in Waukesha, Wisconsin to the late Alwin and Adela (Degner) Haselow. After graduating from the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, Bette was united in marriage with James R. Mertens on September 23, 1950 in Hartland, Wisconsin. She was a devoted wife and mother and was an excellent cook. She and her husband Jim loved to travel in their retirement years. Bette loved wildflowers. She was a sweet woman who was always ready to help others and, as a result, she was loved by all who knew her. She also had the gift of remembering birthdays and always made you feel special on your day. Bette was a member of St. Mark”s Episcopal Church.
Survivors include her husband, Jim Mertens of Juneau; two sons, Jim Mertens of Redmond, WA amd Jeffrey Mertens of Menomonee Falls; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Bette was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mildred Beletsky; and her brother, Alwin Haselow, Jr.
