Ernest Slovak, 87, of Beaver Dam, WI, passed away at the Beaver Dam Community Hospital on Monday, August 29, 2011.
Ernest was born on October 18, 1923 to John and Anna (Grund) Slovak in Racine, WI. He graduated from Horlick High School in 1941. Ernest Attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a master”s degree in engineering and a master”s degree in business. Ernie entered the armed forces in January of 1943 and returned home in 1946. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for exemplary conduct in ground combat against the armed enemy during the Rhineland Campaign in the European Theatre. Ernie was with the 69th division, 272nd Infantry, Company I. He was proud of being part of the surrender of the Germans at the Elbe River where they met the Russians and the Germans surrendered in April of 1945. He was a member of the John E. Miller American Legion Post #146. He was married to Margaret Graham in 1950 and she preceded him in death. Ernie married Marion Wild Slovak in 1984. He was plant engineer at the Malleable Iron Range Company for 30 years. Ernie loved to travel. He toured the homeland of his parents who were immigrants to the US from the Czech Republic seven times. Ernie traveled extensively throughout the US and overseas.
Survivors are his wife, Marion; step daughter, Andrea (David) Utrie and their children, Gina (Scott), Ben (Sara), Joe (Victoria), and Tony; step son, Jeffrey (Nan)Wild and their children, Andrew and Beth; and step daughter, Rebecca (Paul) Wild Langeness and their children, Luke, Dan, Sarah and Ellen; five step great-grandchildren, Ian, Molly, Simon, Alex, and Anders; nephew, Arnold (Pat) Janot; nieces, Clarice Rohling, Laurie Berger, and Shirley Janot. Ernie was preceded in death by his first wife in l981, his parents, John and Anna Slovak, a brother, John Slovak, and a sister, Helen Janot.
The visitation will be at Murray Funeral Home in Beaver Dam on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. The funeral will follow at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11:00 AM with Pastor Jeff Wild (stepson) from Advent Lutheran Church in Madison officiating. Military honors will be provided by the John E. Miller American Legion Post #146 at the funeral home following the service. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Graceland Cemetery in Racine.
If desired memorials may be made to the Trosten Haus or the Badger Honor Flight for World War II Veterans.
