Harriet L. Westphal, age 90, of Reeseville, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2012 at Sylvan Crossing of Hunter Ridge in Beaver Dam.
Visitation for Harriet will be at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 105 Juneau Road in Lowell, on Saturday, December 29, 2012 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will follow at church on Saturday at 11:00 AM with Pastor Paul Vander Galien officiating. Burial will follow at Lowell Cemetery.
Harriet was born in the Town of Lowell on January 29, 1922 to Roland and Amy (nee Yuenger) Wendt. She graduated from Reeseville High School in 1940 as the valedictorian of her class. Harriet was united in marriage with Otto Westphal on May 10, 1941 in Town of Lowell at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church. Otto preceded her in death in 1970. She had a deep desire to work in the medical field, and as a high school student, she worked for Dr. Frederick; she later worked for over 25 years as a medical nurse and in medical records at Clearview in Juneau. Harriet was a life-time member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, enjoyed being a member of the Ladies Aid, and served as Past President.
Harriet loved living in the country, being an active “Chairman of the Board” of the family farming business, making meals for farm hands, served on both the Dodge County Library Board and the Tri County Library Board (Dodge, Jefferson, and Fond du Lac Counties) for many years. Harriet had a deep love of book reading; she loved taking vacations to Boston, New York, D.C., Arizona, and short trips to Northern Wisconsin with her sister Naomi and her son”s family. She will be deeply missed but always remembered for her love and the caring spot in her heart for others, and especially in rescuing Great Danes and other four-legged friends. Even in the latter years of her life, Harriet would made sure those around her had feed for their four-legged friends.
Harriet is survived by two sons, Robert (Sandy) Westphal of Reeseville and Jonathan (Sharon) Westphal of Columbus; her grandchildren, Brian (Tanya) Westphal of Reeseville, Holly (Paul) Danieli of Boston, Lisa (Trooper) Maffet of Middleton, and Christopher (Megan) Westphal of Madison; four great grandchildren, Kalie and Kari Westphal of Reeseville, and Jake and Jenna Danieli of Boston; a former daughter-in-law, Jean (Roger) Haase; a faithful and loving sister, Naomi Griepentrog of Beaver Dam; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-inlaw.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Sylvan Crossing, Hillside Homecare/Hospice, and Pastor Paul Vander Galien for their love and caring support.
