Ione J. Peil, 89, a lifelong resident of Columbus passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at At Home Again Assisted Living in Columbus surrounded by her three loving sons.
Ione Joyce was born the daughter of Otto and Meta (Huebner) Obermeyer on February 23, 1924 on her family farm in the Town of Fountain Prairie, near Fall River, WI. She was a 1941 graduate of Columbus High School. In 1943, Ione was married to Frederic Smith in Columbus. She was later married to Edwin Peil in 1967 in Columbus.
Ione was a lifelong member of Olivet Congregational – UCC in Columbus, where she was active in the Social Circle, the choir and also taught Sunday school. Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting and gardening. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Ione was a mentor to the people she loved. She will be remembered as a selfless person who was able to face life’s challenges head-on.
Ione is survived by the loves of her life, her three sons: Gene (Carol) Smith of West Des Moines, IA, Gary (Debbie) Smith of Naperville, IL and Dale (Sherry) Smith of Verona, WI; her supportive and caring brother, Virgil (Gloria) Obermeyer of Columbus; her seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and further survived by other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Edwin Peil in 1995.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, March 25, 2013 at Olivet Congregational-UCC in Columbus with the Rev. Lee Zortman and Chaplain Dennis Richards officiating. A visitation will also be held on Monday from 10 am until 11 am at the church. Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Columbus.
Memorials: Memorials may be directed to Hillside Hospice in Beaver Dam or to the Olivet Congregational-UCC Social Circle in Columbus.
