James Allen Porten Sr.

September 8, 1932 - June 5, 2012

James A. Porten, age 79, of Horicon, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at his home.

The visitation will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, June 9, 2012 from 9:00 AM until 10:45 AM. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at the church on Saturday at 11:00 AM with Fr. Mike Petrie officiating. Burial will be at St. Malachy Cemetery in Horicon with Military Honors provided by the Horicon American Legion Post #157.

James Allen Porten was born on September 8, 1932 in Waukesha, Wisconsin to Richard and Viola (Rice) Porten. He was a 1950 graduate of Horicon High School, and then joined the Navy during the Korean War until his honorable discharge in 1954. On April 4, 1959, Jim was united in marriage with Patricia Dimel at St. Peter”s Church in Beaver Dam. He worked for the railroad from 1957 until his retirement in 1993. Jim was a creative woodworker and had a passion for restoring cars. He also enjoyed gardening and fishing on Pelican Lake. Jim was a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church of Horicon for 42 years and was also a member of St. Katharine Drexel Parish in Beaver Dam.

Jim will be missed by his wife, Pat of Horicon; sons, Patrick (Lisa) of Medford, Daniel (Lisa) of Markesan, John “Radar” (Julie) of Horicon, Timothy of Iron Ridge, Dennis, Christopher, Thomas, and Richard “Hank”, all of Horicon; grandchildren, Samuel, Benjamin, Sean, Ian, and Colin, Carly and Matthew, Katherine (Travis) Neuberger, Karen (Richard) Burwitz, Heather and Kimberly, and David Sayles (fiancAC.e, Alyssa Tighe); great grandchildren, Rylan and Branson Burwitz, Landri Neuberger, and Brayden Sayles; sister, Mary Ann Craig of Menomonee Falls; sister-in-law, Betty Porten of Wauwatosa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Richard and Dennis.

If desired, memorials may be made in James A. Porten”s name to Sacred Heart Parish or to St. Katharine Drexel Parish.

Tootie recalls that Jim was a year behind her in the famous Van Brunt Memorial High School. I remember Jim and a railroad guy who always managed a smile when we met/talked. As I drive the backroad to Beaver Dam and bye your homestead, I will think about Jim. He will be missed by more than his immediate family.
