James “Jim” Tamminga, 85, of Horicon, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011 at the Hospice Home of Hope, Fond du Lac.
Visitation for Jim will be at the Murray Funeral Home, Horicon on Monday, Aug. 22, 2011 from 5 to 8 PM, and Tuesday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 222 S. Cedar St., Horicon from 10-11 AM. Services will follow at church at 11 AM, Tuesday, with Pastor Tim Worgan and Pastor Ray Field officiating. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery, Horicon, with Military Graveside Services conducted by the Horicon American Legion Post 157.
James Tamminga was born on May 9, 1926 in Friesland, to Tom & Josie (DeYoung) Tamminga. He married Geraldine “Gerri” Buhert on May 12, 1951 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Horicon. They shared over 55 years together. After his 1944 graduation from Randolph High School, Jim enlisted in the Army, serving in the Phillipines during WW II. Jim was employed at John Deere Horicon Works as an assembler for over 40 years, retiring in August, 1987. He served as financial secretary of IAM Local 873 for 30 years. After retiring he joined the SpitFire Club. His life of service was evident to family and friends, in church, family, and his community. He served on the City Council as Alderman for 10 years, in the Kiwanis for 30 years, and was also active in the United Methodist Church, in many positions. In his later years, he continued to serve by arriving early to open the doors and fold bulletins for services.
Jim was a member of the American Legion Post 157.He also contributed his energies to the Oakhill Cemetery Board and volunteered at the Beaver Dam Community Hospital. With his outgoing personality, it was common for him to strike up a conversation with anyone- friend or stranger. Being raised on a farm, he loved to garden and shared many vegetables with physicians, friends, and family members. He was proud of all his grandchildren and loved his great grandchildren.
Survivors include his three children; Steven (Tammi) Tamminga, Horicon, Jill (Robert) Bradley, Waupun, and Scott (Linda) Tamminga, Rochester, MN, seven grandchildren; Jamie (Patrick) Froh, Ryan (Kari) Tamminga, Shane (Kelly) Bradley, Brian (Erin) Bradley, Kyle, Matthew, and Brett Tamminga,six great-grandchildren; Halle, Addison, Ben, Liam and Cullen Bradley, and Madeline Froh, one sister Lois (Harvey) Vande Zande, Waupun and one brother Merlin Tamminga of Horicon.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, wife Gerri on March 27, 2007, a sister Lois Jane Tamminga and a brother Nathan Tamminga.
The family suggests memorials in Jim”s name to the Horicon Emmanuel United Methodist Church Building Fund.
