John B. Sternweis, age 86, of Horicon, died on Friday, May 13, 2011 at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam.
The visitation will be at Murray Funeral Home in Horicon on Monday, May 16, 2011 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM and at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Horicon on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at St. Malachy Cemetery in Horicon with military honors provided by the Horicon American Legion Post #157.
John Barnabas Sternweis was born on June 17, 1924 in Marshfield, Wisconsin to Anton and Margaret (Dieringer) Sternweis. He was a 1942 graduate of Marshfield High School. John worked for the University of Wisconsin Agricultural Department for two years. He served in the US army in 1944 for two years until his honorable discharge. He was united in marriage with Anna “Jerry” Harris on September 28, 1946 at St. Andrew Church in Flushing, NY. She preceded him in death. John was later united in marriage to Shirley (Schmid) Albert on November 27, 1993 at St. Malachy Catholic Church in Horicon. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, serving on the council for nine years. John was a member of the Horicon American Legion Post #157 for over sixty years. He did volunteer driving for Dodge County Transport. John enjoyed many years raising quarter horses. He bought wild horses from western states and broke and trained them. John also built horse drawn wagons and sleighs and enjoyed giving rides.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Horicon; sons, John (Lisa) of Shawnee, OK, and James (Mary) of Cleveland, OH; daughters, Jackie (Michael) Leigl of Van Dyne, WI, and Susan (Gary) Hurelle of Lakewood, CO; ten grandchildren, Thomas, Sarah, and Carol Sternweis; Jason (Julie), Ryan (Colleen), Tony (Andrea), Mary, Patrick, and Michael Leigl; Derek (Christi) Hurelle; and seven great grandchildren. He is further survived by one sister, Malinda Gropp, one brother, James (Jenny) Sternweis and one sister-in-law, Ruby (Alvin) Heckel, all of Marshfield, WI; a niece, Joyce (Don) Arakaki of Hawaii, other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna “Jerry”; infant son, Joseph; parents, two brothers; one sister; foster daughter, Carol and one brother-in-law.
The family suggests that memorials be made in John Sternweis” name to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or to the Horicon American Legion Post #157.
