Margaret A. Chynoweth

Margaret Ann (Shonts) Chynoweth, 87, passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at Benedictine Manor Nursing Home in LaCrosse, Wisc. A long-time resident of Horicon, WI, Margaret was born June 16, 1929 in Oklahoma City, OK. She and her parents, Raymond O. Shonts and Mamie Belle Pair, moved to Horicon in 1931. Twenty years later, Margaret married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Samuel Chynoweth on October 13, 1951. Their 52-year union was surrounded by family; friends and community, and rich with books, travel and adventure. Margaret was a 1947 graduate of Horicon High School. She is a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Horicon and a past member of St. Malachy Catholic Church in Horicon. Margaret was employed by the Horicon Reporter & Neitzel Insurance.She is survived by daughters Therese Chynoweth of Fort Atkinson, WI; Margo (Michael Merola) Chynoweth-Merola of La Crosse, WI; and Gwen (William Meyer) Chynoweth of Shorewood, MN; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents, and brother Charles Shonts.A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, August 12th at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Parish in Horicon, with the Rev. Father Mike Petrie celebrating. A visitation will also be held on Friday, August 12th from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Parish. Burial will take place at St. Malachy Catholic Cemetery in Horicon.Margaret will be lovingly remembered as a kind, quiet wife and mother with remarkable strength of character. While she didn’t like to cook, you’d never know it if you were lucky enough to sample her pasties, potato salad, chocolate chip date cake and lemon bars. Her fondness for sweets taught her daughters that “life is short, so eat dessert first.” We’ll miss you, Mom.
