Margaret M. Schneider passed away peacefully following a short illness on October 15, 2012 at her home in Horicon surrounded by loved ones.
A visitation will be held at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 505 North Palmatory Street in Horicon, on Friday, October 19, 2012 from 10am to noon. Funeral services will follow at church on Friday at 12:00 noon with Rev. Daniel Seehafer officiating. Burial will follow at Oakhill Cemetery in Horicon.
Margaret was born on November 7, 1929, to Walter and Olga (Hrbacek) Seidensticker in Cushing, Oklahoma. Walter was a Lutheran minister who was called to take over a congregation in Ashippun, Wisconsin in 1935. Margaret remembered very little from her years in Oklahoma, and always considered Ashippun her home town. After eighth grade, she attended Milwaukee Lutheran High School and graduated in 1947.
Not long after leaving high school, she attended a friend”s wedding where she met George Schneider from Horicon, who became the love of her life. They married on November 13, 1949 and eventually had three daughters. In 1956 they built a home on North Cedar Street in Horicon, and have lived there ever since.
Margaret worked at the local John Deere dealership, Sternweis Equipment, on Highway 33 for many years. She also worked for John Deere in Horicon. In her spare time she loved to play golf and bridge, and was considered a great player in both. A gambler at heart, Las Vegas was a favorite destination, but she was equally happy to lose money at the local casinos in Wisconsin. She also loved her garden, and enjoyed looking at other people”s gardens. For one year they hosted a foreign exchange student from Japan, who became an important part of their lives.
From 1949 until her death she was an active member of St. Stephen”s Lutheran Church in Horicon. Over the years she served the church in many different capacities, and she was especially proud of her contribution as part of the committee that was tasked with building the new church on North Palmatory Street ten years ago.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Veronika, along with several brothers- and sisters-in-law and a son-in-law. She is survived by George, her husband of almost 63 years; her daughters, Peggy Schneider of Milwaukee, Jenny (Randy) Waller of Arlington, Texas, Patricia (Robert F. Jr.) Bettler of Louisville, Kentucky, and Mikiko Matsumoto of Tokyo, Japan; three grandchildren, Daniel and Eric Steele of Arlington and Tess Bettler of Louisville; three sisters, Philippa Glines of Berlin, New Hampshire, Leah Leyrer of Milwaukee, and Charlotte Rasch of Milwaukee; and one brother Stephen (Jan) Seidensticker of San Diego, California. There are also many cousins, nieces, and nephews along with numerous friends who will have many fun and pleasant memories of her.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has helped so much in the past, especially their wonderful neighbors, their patient and understanding caregivers Janice and Karen, and the people at Beaver Dam Community Hospital Hospice Care. Without them, her last days would have been much more difficult.
