Marie C. Schoenwetter, 91, of Beaver Dam passed away on July 18, 2008 at Cedar Lake Health Care Center in West Bend, Wisconsin, following a lingering illness.
Marie was born in 1917 in Portage, Wisconsin, the fourth child of Robert and Anna Monthey. She was preceded in death by her parents and step father, Charlie Funk; her sister, Calixta; and brothers Robert Jr. and Cliff, all of Portage. Marie graduated from Portage High School in 1934 and worked in Portage until moving to Beaver Dam in 1937 where she was employed by the State of Wisconsin Unemployment Office. In 1941 she married Howard Schoenwetter who would later serve as president of the First National Bank and Trust Company of Beaver Dam until his death in 1982.
Marie”s commitment to her community was clearly demonstrated through her many volunteer endeavors. Active in the women”s organizations at St. Patrick”s Catholic church, she was also a member of the Red Cross Auxiliary, was a Beaver Dam Community Hospital Auxiliary charter member, was one of the first “runners” for Meals on Wheels, assisted in volunteer activities at Lakeview and the Manor for over thirty years, and worked as an election judge in Beaver Dam until just recently.
Marie attended daily mass at St. Patrick”s for decades, and cherished her bridge groups, neighbors and the many friends who kept her socially involved. She enjoyed sewing, flower arranging, and attending the many school and sports activities of her sons and grandchildren.
Marie is survived by three sons, Bob (Kathy) of Glenview, Illinois; Chuck (Shari) of Mountain Home, Arkansas; and Dave (Katie) of West Bend. Marie was also the proud grandmother of six grandchildren: Christopher (Jennifer) Schoenwetter of Horicon, Patrick (Ann Marie) Schoenwetter of Baltimore, Ned (Ali) Schoenwetter of Ventura, David Schoenwetter of Chicago, Sara (Tim) Ginal of Chicago and Joseph Schoenwetter of West Bend. Other surviving family members are her step-granddaughter, Melissa (Troy) Boettcher of Columbus and step-grandson, Christopher (Teresa) Sawyer of Horicon. Marie also cherished her five great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren.
The family wishes to express its appreciation to the friends and health care providers from Beaver Dam and West Bend who supported Marie throughout her illness.
A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church,127 West Maple Avenue. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Wednesday at 11:00 AM with Fr. John Schreiter officiating.
Memorials may be made in Marie”s name to St. Katharine Drexel Parish and School or to Dodge Health Foundation at Beaver Dam Community Hospital.
