Mary A. Schessow, age 89, of Horicon, died Saturday, June 30, 2012 at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam.
Visitation for Mary will be at Zion Lutheran Church, 317 E. Walnut Street in Horicon, on Thursday, July 5, 2012 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM. Funeral services will follow at church on Thursday beginning at 2:00 PM with Rev. Mark Hasty officiating. Burial will be at Oakhill Cemetery in Horicon.
Mary Alice was born on August 20, 1922 to the late Alfred and Blanche (Rinehart) Tritt in Concordia, Kansas. After graduating from high school in Lewis, Kansas, she attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, Kansas where she received her Bachelor”s Degree in Education in May 1943. For the next three years, Mary worked as a teacher in Kansas. On August 28, 1946, Mary was united in marriage with Herbert Jackson. They lived in Lincoln, Nebraska and Basel Switzerland. After their divorce in 1960, Mary and her daughters moved to Horicon, Wisconsin where she was the high school librarian for 19 years. She returned to school and earned her Master Degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. On June 19, 1965, she was united in marriage with Milton Schessow. Mary enjoyed sewing clothes and quilting for herself and her grandchildren. Her love of music spanned her lifetime, from playing violin and piano to directing the Zion Lutheran Church Choir for eight years.
Survivors include her daughter, Elaine Zousel of Wichita, KS; four step-children, Sheila (Doug) Tesch of Beaver Dam, Lili (Wayne) Zamzow of Beaver Dam, Milton (Judy) Schessow, Jr. of Horicon, and Darlene (Lester) Pegelow of Horicon; a daughter-in-law, Eileen Schessow of Beaver Dam; 16 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a great great granddaughter; other relatives and friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Herbert Jackson; her second husband, Milton Schessow; a daughter, Annetta Coyer; a grandson, Richard Zousel; a step-son, Dennis Schessow; and a step-daughter, Janet Polzin.
