The former Mary Agnes Riley was born in Appleton, Wisconsin to the late Michael and Katherine (O”Connell) Riley. As a child, she moved with her family to Milwaukee where she attended Jesu Elementary School and later graduated from Holy Angels Academy. She also attended Marquette University in Milwaukee and studied Irish history. Mary worked for Wisconsin Telephone Company where she met Raymond J. Gleason. In October of 1930, they were united in marriage in Milwaukee. Mary stopped working to raise her family; she loved being a mother and she served as a Girl Scout leader. After several moves, they eventually settled in Beaver Dam. When her husband retired, they moved back to the Green Bay area, closer to where Ray”s family lived. Mary loved trees, antiques, reading and the Green Bay Packers. She was a giving person, as well; for many years she would recondition dolls, blankets and toys and donate them to St. Vincent de Paul for Christmas.
Mary is survived by her three daughters, Maureen (Richard) Horan of Madison, Patricia (Don) Everman of Beaver Dam and Kathleen (Carl) Williamson of Sun Prairie, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Imelda, in infancy, and Celine Kanellos, a granddaughter, Deborah Ann, and two sisters, Cecile Coughlin and Belinda Sobush.
The family suggests that memorials be made to the St. Katharine Drexel Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 131 West Maple Avenue, Beaver Dam, Wisconsin 53916.
The Murray Funeral Home in Beaver Dam is caring for the family. Online condolences may be made on our website at www.MurrayFH.com.
