Mary A. Hickey, age 81, died on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at the Remembrance Home in Beaver Dam.
The visitation will be on Friday, November 20, 2009 at St. Katharine Drexel Church, 127 W. Maple Ave., in Beaver Dam from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Friday at the church at 11:00 AM with Fr. Jose Gonzalez officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick”s Cemetery in Beaver Dam.
The former Mary Agnes Laufer was born on December 16, 1927 in Milwaukee, WI to Peter J. and Agnes Mary (Wolf) Laufer. Mary was a graduate of Mercy High School in Milwaukee and of Marquette University. On August 6, 1949 she was united in marriage with Thomas Hickey in Milwaukee. After moving to Beaver Dam, Mary was a dedicated member of the library board for 36 years, including service as its chair. She was on the board when the new library was planned and opened in 1985. She was also involved with the League of Women Voters and was a literacy tutor. Mary taught at Moraine Park Technical College for a few years and was a real estate agent, working for Hickey Real Estate in Beaver Dam. She was a past member of St. Patrick”s Catholic Church where she was involved with the Daughters of Isabella. Mary was a phenomenal bridge player and an avid knitter. She will be missed by her family and friends.
Survivors are her children, Mary Ann (Greg) Renz, Peter Hickey and former wife, Sheila Hickey, Thomas (Jane) Hickey, Jr., John Hickey, Margaret (Bob Wrenn) Hickey, Martha (Ashley Mitchell) Hickey, grandchildren, Erin (Jesse), and Emily (Dave), Michael, Lydia, and Tommy, Eliot, Mac, Madeleine and Sam, and Zoe, great grandchild, Stella, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
The family expresses a special thank you to Kathy Bates and all the staff at the Remembrance Home for their exceptionally kind care and to Fr. Jose Gonzalez.
The family suggests that memorials be made in Mary”s name to the Remembrance Home, 1810 N. Spring St., or to the Beaver Dam Community Library, 311 N. Spring St., Beaver Dam, WI, 53916.
