Melody was a wonderful friend to my mom, Jo Bleick. They worked together many years but their friendship went beyond work. My mom passed 18 months ago. They were special duo and we send our condolences to Linda and Frank, My mom loved seeing you both on her visits. God Bless. Sandie Campbell

"Miss Derleth" was my homeroom teacher in junior high, and I believe she was new, so we kids didn't know who or what we were getting. It soon became clear we were the luckiest kids of all. She was always on our side, a true guide and friend, but also tough enough (firm but fair) to call us out if need be (no pushover ever!). But mostly she instructed and "mentored" us just by being herself, namely warm, humorous (she loved teasing), and really cool. We loved Miss Derleth completely. She once told everyone she had to miss the Cornstalk Carnival, "sorry, you kids have fun"--and we all bought her story. Then at the Carnival this garish clown kept circulating and greeting us all by name in a deep voice (spooky), and absolutely nobody guessed that it was she, Miss Derleth--a great disguise and prank! She also took a few of us down to the Rathskeller of the UW Union so we could see what college students looked like ("behave yourselves now"--she added). What a generous treat on her part! For a good number of years afterward, my mother who'd taken a shine to Mel/Melody invited her regularly for dinner, so I was very fortunate to keep our friendship alive. I'd stop in to catch up in Beaver Dam whenever headed to family in Green Bay--very good times. She and I also took in some UW football games together, too, and she was a pro with her football-watching gear, warm and comfy and roaring for the Badgers. Talking all the time about other stuff, too--a person with so much curiosity, knowledge, kindness (a gentle listener and easy laugher), whose company was always full of fun and spirit and thoughtful give-and-take. She was a teacher after all!--and I love her still. God bless you, Mel!

Aunt Mel you made such a tremendous impact on my life in ways you'll never know. I know how blessed I was to have you as a role model and guide throughout my life. You were like my second mom growing up and I am so grateful for the time I got to spend with you making Christmas candies, golfing, going to sporting events but most of all showing me the true meaning of family!
