Merlin H. Handel, 87 years old, of Hustisford, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Kathy Hospice in West Bend.A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 28 at 3:00 p.m. at Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church in Hustisford, with the Rev. Kesting officiating. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 28 from 12 noon until the time of the service at 3 p.m. Burial will take place at the Hustisford City Cemetery.Merlin was born the son of Ted and Irma (Giese) Handel on September 8, 1929. He was a graduate of Mayville High School. On January 22, 1949 he was united in marriage to Betty Ferries in Beaver Dam. Merlin had worked for Mayville Metal Products for many years until his retirement. He also learned the trade of blacksmithing from his father and was highly skilled at making ornamental iron work and had a shop called Handel’s Wrought Iron. In his spare time Merlin loved to be outdoors in nature whether trap shooting, hunting, fishing, boating, softball, or waterskiing. Early in his life he enjoyed music and played with the Iron Ridge Community Band and the Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps. in Hartford.Merlin is survived by his children- Cynthia (Roger) Kunz of Neosho, Michael (Jane) Handel of Oconomowoc, Lori (William) Lange of Iron Ridge, and Patrick (special friend Laura Nehls) Handel of Hustisford. His sister- Mildred Gnerlich of West Bend. Grandchildren- Lisa Kunz, Nathan (Kimberly) Kunz, Angela Halmstad, Erin Handel, Emily (Ryan) Curless, and Audra Lange. Great grandchildren- Andrew, Braeden, Isabella, Gavin, Sophia, and Harper. Special friend Janice Schulz. Nephew Rodney Gnerlich. Further survived by other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, sister Barbara, children David and Lisa Marie, brother in law Lawrence Gnerlich, and grandson Anthony Handel.Memorials may be directed to Bethany Ev.
