Paul O. Derber, Jr, age 90, was called home by the Lord on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at his house in Beaver Dam.
Visitation for Paul will be at the Koepsell-Murray Funeral Home, N7199 North Crystal Lake Road in Beaver Dam, on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11:30 AM. Burial will be Oak Hill Cemetery in Horicon.
Paul Oscar Derber, Jr. was born on April 10, 1923 in Milwaukee to Paul Curt and Marie (Schlesinger) Derber. Paul was a first generation American, his parents having immigrated from Germany and Austria. Paul grew up hunting and fishing on the Horicon Marsh and was active in Boy Scouts, attaining the rank of Eagle. He graduated from Horicon High School in 1942 and soon after, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Paul served as a gunner in the 629th Tank Destroyer Battalion in Europe and fought in the Battle of the Bulge; he served as a Corporal and attained the rank of Sergeant by the time of his discharge in 1945. After the war, he returned home and worked for his father’s grocery/meat market in Horicon. Paul married Virginia Linck in June of 1952 and then worked for C.C. Linck, Inc Road Construction for many years until his retirement. Paul enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting. He won many trophies shooting with the Nawahoco Rifle League. He enjoyed woodworking and building things. In July of 1993, he married Effie Maddison.
Paul is survived by his four children, Dana (Kevin Sullivan), James (Kim Larlee), Debra (Wayne Oien), and Alan Derber; stepchildren, Joseph Maddison (Eve Fillenbaum) and James Maddison (Beth); nine grandchildren; three step grandchildren; one great grandson; his loyal German Short-Haired Pointer, Cindy; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his half-sister, Erna (Schultz, Ziebell); and his second wife, Effie (Maddison).
