Roger R. Acker, age 91, formerly of Horicon, died on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Hillside Manor in Beaver Dam.
The visitation will be at Zion Lutheran Church in Horicon on Thursday, March 15, 2012 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. The funeral service will follow at the church on Thursday at 11:30 AM with Rev. Mark Hasty officiating. Burial will be at Oakhill Cemetery in Horicon with Military Honors provided by the Horicon American Legion Post #157.
Roger Robert Acker was born on February 28, 1921 in Horicon, Wisconsin, son of Charles Acker and Helen (Hicks) Acker-Winning. He graduated from Horicon High School in 1939. Roger served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII and was honorably discharged on September 30, 1945. On September 20, 1947, he was united in marriage with Eleanor (Spittel) Acker. They enjoyed dancing to big bands and Roger was responsible for bringing big bands to the Horicon Park Pavilion. Roger enjoyed fishing, bird watching, playing cards, trips to Las Vegas, bowling with the John Deere League and coaching Little League Baseball. He was an avid Packer fan; attending the Ice Bowl in 1967, a Cub fan and a Badger fan. For over 30 years, Roger and Eleanor looked forward to attending the WIAA Boys Tournament. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Horicon where he was on the council. Roger was a Quality Assurance Technician at John Deere until his retirement. He was a wonderful husband and a loving father and grandfather.
Roger is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eleanor of Beaver Dam; daughter, Susan Acker of Beaver Dam; son, Jan (Sara) Acker of Scottsdale, AZ ; grandchildren, Sara Jane of Bowling Green, KY, J.R. and Allison, both of Scottsdale, AZ; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Albert and Harold, one step-brother, Clyde Haskins, many loved brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, a nephew, and nieces.
